Abstract

The rumah gadang represents a symbol of identity and cultural wisdom of the Minangkabau community, rooted in a matrilineal kinship system. However, modernization and globalization have posed challenges in the form of shifting functions and cultural values. This study aims to analyze how communities in the Saribu Rumah Gadang Area, Solok Selatan Regency, organize social movements in efforts to revitalize culture. Academically, this study contributes to enriching the discourse on culture-based social movements, while practically serving as a reference for community-based cultural preservation. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method, utilizing field observations, in-depth interviews with niniak mamak, bundo kanduang, and tourism actors, as well as literature review. The findings indicate that the community actively acts as the subject of social movements by mobilizing resources, reframing the identity of the rumah gadang as both cultural heritage and an economic asset, and maintaining its socio-cultural functions amid tourism development. This study concludes that cultural revitalization is more effective when grounded in collective community awareness, thereby emphasizing the importance of involving indigenous communities in sustaining Minangkabau cultural values.
